What a render of a Goan house has to get right
Houses in Goa are built for heavy rain and strong sun. Roofs are pitched and tiled, verandahs are deep, and walls are often laterite stone or lime-washed plaster. New villas borrow from the old Indo-Portuguese houses: the covered porch with built-in seats, tall shuttered windows, patterned floor tiles. A render that gives the house a flat roof and a lawn from another climate looks wrong to anyone who knows Goa.
The setting matters as much as the building. Plots have old mango and coconut trees that are kept, a well, a laterite boundary wall, a paddy field or a hill beyond. Send photographs of the plot and its trees with the drawings, and we place the house among what is really there.
